First published the same year as Randolph Stow’s The Merry-go-round in the Sea, Colin Thiele’s February Dragon and Ivan Southall’s Ash Road, this larger than life yarn about “the dry, blustering, rather hard Australian boy” in the era immediately prior to American influence is set in Kananook, a fictionalised Frankston relocated much further south down the Mornington Peninsula. That David Malouf’s Johnno shares significant characteristics with Don Charlwood’s is reason enough to read this novel.
